Going Loco: Part 14: Painted locomotives

I have now finished painting the last of my toy train set conversions. These are two 0-6-0 locomotives …

… and one 0-4-0 locomotive.

They were painted with Humbrol matt enamel paint (Black No.33).

The locomotives have turned out very well, but might I suggest some brass pipework and some dry brushing to suggest wear and tear of the connecting rods &c. would enliven them?

  2. Arthur1815,

I must admit that they do look a little too drab and uninteresting as they are, and I am thinking about adding a bit of colour to them. Dry brushing them might well do the trick. For the moment – however – I have something else on my modelling table that I want to finish and paint.

    All the best,

  3. I do like these, but I agree with arthur1815 that a little splash of colour or metalwork here and there – nothing huge – would enliven them a little. I was thinking in terms of a narrow ring around the funnel in red, light blue or yellow, and maybe a small number on the cab by way of identification.

  4. Archduke Piccolo,

I agree that the locomotives – and the rolling stock – need a bit of detailing, and once my new Ironclad vs. Ironclad project is complete I will return to my toy train set conversions to add some.

I particularly like the idea of individual cab numbers, and will certainly be adding some in due course.

    All the best,
