Going Loco: Part 8: Update

I have continued to work on my cheap train set conversions and now have:

Two 0-6-0 locomotives

Two 0-4-0 locomotives

One armoured locomotive

Five flatbed wagons

Three high-sided wagons

Two armoured wagons

(The turret fitted to the right-hand armoured wagon came from my spares box, and began life as the main armament of a model of an American Ashville-class patrol boat.)

One railway gun

(The railway gun’s armament was made from bits and pieces of Plasticard tubing and girders. The design is based upon a French railway gun that was used during the First World War, but it is suitably generic to used with most late nineteenth/early twentieth century wargames armies.)

I still have several of the cheap train sets as yet unopened … and hope to buy some more if I can as I have lots of ideas for further conversions. In the meantime I need to paint the conversions that I have already made, although I would like to replace the existing couplings before I do so.

Very impressed with your conversions , Tony

  2. A.W. Kitchen (Tony),

Many thanks for your kind words. I hope that the conversions will look even more impressive when they are painted.

    All the best,

    Those look really good!
Encouraged me to finish my armoured loco and gun car that I have been working on over Christmas

  4. Tomo says:

Once they are covered with paint to tie them together will make what you have created even better!

  5. Ian Dury,

I am very pleased with the way they have turned out so far … and a drop of paint should improve them no end!

I look forward to seeing how your conversions look once they are done.

    All the best,

  6. Tomo,

I totally agree that a unifying paint scheme should improve the overall impression of my conversions.

    All the best,

They look superb, can't wait to see them painted. Have you decided on a scheme for them yet?

  8. Johntheone,

    Thanks very much.

    All the best,

  9. Pete,

Many thanks for your kind words.

I am thinking about painting the non-military locomotives black and the rolling stock brown with black underframes. The armoured locomotive, wagons, and railway gun will be green.

    All the best,

  10. Pete. says:

Will look good in those colours- kept generic too gives it more flexibility too.

  11. Pete,

That's what I thought. If I do any more conversions in the future, I might use some other paint colours, but for the moment I am going to stick to simple, generic colours.

    All the best,

  12. The Dancing CakeTin,

Thanks very much! It has been a very enjoyable project so far.

    All the best,

  13. Nigel Drury says:

Are they likely to make an appearance at COW?

  14. Nigel Drury,

No plans as yet … but you never know.

    All the best,

  16. Ian Dury says:

Bob – I have just e-mailed you a Word document with pictures of the wagons I have made so far and some notes of how I made them. Please let me know that it has all arrived okay

  17. Ian Dury,

Thanks very much for the document. Your conversions are much more extensive than mine and look very impressive. I look forward to seeing them when they are painted.

    All the best,
